On Saturday the 28th January, Boulder Track Club (BTC) athletes will converged at Harlow Platts Park for the annual Fast and Flurry-ous 4 mile XC race staged by the Boulder Running Company.

The Fast and Flurry-ous was originally put together a few years back to give local runners the opportunity to race hard in order to tune their efforts before going off to the USATF Cross Country Nationals in February each year. But this year’s event was highly anticipated and talked about due to a newborn rivalry concept between the Boulder Track Club and the Boulder Running Company/ Adidas teams.

BTC and BRC/ Adidas will compete head-to-head in a 5 race series throughout 2012 with Race 1 being the Fast and Flurry-ous. The way the concept will work is the top 4 runners from each team will have their race times combined and the team with the lowest combined total time wins. Typically team scoring is based on place in the field, but what made it particularly interesting for this first race was that they combined both the Women’s and the Men’s team times.

First up was the women’s race with BTC’s Laura Thweatt dominating from the start. Laura was able to comfortably win the race in 22.24 from Ft. Collins athlete Adriana Nelson in 23:04 and Boulder’s Melody Fairchild 3rd running 23:22. Shannon Payne led the BRC/ Adidas women’s team home in 4th (23.43) and they easily beat the BTC women by 3mins and 6secs to take the points in Race 1 for the “Elva Dryer” perpetual trophy. Allison Sawyer was the BTC’s second best performance on the day in 8th (24.21), Mary Miller 23rd (26.43) and Jax Mariash 24th (26.48).

The men’s race was a much closer race early on with BTC’s Matt Tebo running controlled in the front pack with Colorado Springs John Mickowski and Boulder’s Christian Thompson. Tebo tried to break up the leading group just after half way but found the task to difficult with Mickowski taking the victory in 19.49, Thompson 2nd in 19.50 and Tebo fading to 3rd in 19.57.

The BTC men certainly atoned for the women, taking the team’s race for the “Mark Plaatjes” perpetual trophy at season’s end over BRC/ Adidas by 1min 48secs. The ever-reliable Clint Wells was BTC’s second best performer finishing 4th (20.10), then Josh Glaab 6th (20.27) and Curtis Begley 7th (20.28) rounding out the club’s top performers. Loren Ahonen for team BRC/ Adidas was their best performer on the day finishing 5th (20.16).

By comparison, last year’s race was won by BTC’s Jason Hartman who ran 21:05. That was bested by the top 12 of the field today and Joanna Zieger ran 24:21 last year which would have been good for 8th today.

“Today has been as a major success,” claimed coach of the Boulder Track Club, Lee Troop. “It was exciting to hear from all my athletes the enjoyment they got from the race today. The crowds overwhelming support and encouragement for the BTC athletes made them realize that they were not out there racing for themselves. The new race series component has added an extra element to their performance and today was about representing the club, sponsors, supporters but more importantly the community”.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cody Hill from BRC/ Adidas for embracing the concept and congratulate his team on the women’s victory as well as the overall victory. I would also like to thank Fast and Flurry-ous race director Henry Guzman for allowing us to conduct this rivalry concept within his event.” added Troop.

BRC/Addidas’ Adam Rich remarked: “The competition was great and everybody came to the event ready to give it their all. Hats off to the Boulder Track Club as they had the better team today and ran very well. The race series with them should be interesting and offer a good challenge for both teams as the races progress.”

The rivalry will be staged over 5 races (Race 2 – Bolder Boulder 10km/ Race 3 – Classic 10km Colorado Springs/ Race 4 – RMAC XC race Colorado Springs / Race 5 – The Fort Collins Thanksgiving Day Run), the team with the most wins at the end of the year, will receive the Mark Plaatjes Perpetual Trophy (Men) and the Elva Dryer Perpetual Trophy (Women).

The Boulder/Denver area no longer has a shortage of running clubs in the area. Whether you are a serious club team, affiliated with a running store, or just a bunch of friends who like to run together, this is your chance to show your colors and possibly walk away with some serious bragging rights.

Read more about the Boulder Classic race.

Creating a Team

Its quite simple. Register for the race. Then come back to this page and sign yourself and your friends up for the team competition using the form below.

Teams can be made up of all men, all women, or a mix of both (2 men and 1st woman scores).

Top 3 runners will score and teams can be up to 5 people, but if you have a large organization that would like to register more, you certainly can.**

Team members can be a part of either the citizens and the elite races. (subject to change)

Prizes will be awarded for the top teams in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed. The prizes might go deeper than top teams, and we will at least recognize top the Masters.

Winning teams will enjoy a podium finish, awesome product from local companies, a team photo published on Facebook and media websites, a special web badge to add to their own website or blogs, and exclusive bragging rights around town.

All team results will be posted on BoulderRunning.com

Any questions about the Team Challenge can be directed to todd@boulderrunning.com

Group Registration

You don’t have to field a team to register as a group. In fact contact the race director for special pricing for the more participants you bring. Contact Donna Shaw or Matt Hill for details and promotions for your group. northboulderparkclassic@comcast.net

Declare your Team

Remember filling in the form below is not registering participants for the race, just declaring them on a team. You need to make sure each participant is registered as well.

var r7x3p9 = new WufooForm();
r7x3p9.initialize({
'userName':'boulderrunner',
'formHash':'r7x3p9',
'autoResize':true,
'height':'1095'});
r7x3p9.display();

It’s back….this great historic bike race with added running criterium too. Don’t miss the podium boys and girls….and champagne.

A historic bike race, the North Boulder Park Classic to be held on Sunday July 10th, adds a new twist to this year’s event: Colorado’s first criterium style running race. This new one of a kind high speed, high stakes race looks to bring a whole new level of excitement to the local road racing scene.

Last year Race Director Donna Shaw brought back a classic, the North Boulder Park Classic. Back in the 70′s the race was one of the stages of the Red Zinger bike race and in the 80′s continued as the Coors International Bicycle Classic. At the height of it’s popularity, it was said that as many as 300,000 people descended upon North Boulder Park to witness the Men’s and Women’s Pro Races.

Last year’s race was such a success she had many people, including those in her Monday night running group No Boundries, suggest she put on a running race as well.

The day starts out at 7:30am with the citizens’ 5 lap/5k and will be highlighted by the Men’s and Women’s Elite races also 5 laps/5k. The lap around North Boulder Park is both challenging and fast. The criterium format will allow fans to see the runners come by multiple times and the leaders sprint for mid race “primes”. Qualifying 5k times for the Elite Men is under 17 minutes and 19 minutes for the women.

“We are looking to make this a really fun event for everyone, the spectators as well as the athletes. We have podium presentations with champagne, flowers, podium girls and boys – the works, we try to make it a big deal.” said Shaw

There will be a kids fun area with jumpy castles, the ever popular Kid’s bike race and PeeWee Rally where everyone is a winner, of course the idyllic park. For the adult set there’s a sports expo, food by Ideal Market and a beer garden. It’ll be one of those magical Boulder days at one of Colorado’s most celebrated parks.

There will be an announcer for both the running and cycling events and local celeb Ryan Van Duzer will be on hand circling through the crowds and getting them riled up in his usual style. Chip timing will be provided by Running Bears.

Shaw also has some great sponsors lined up to help make the morning even more festive including Title Sponsor Flatirons Subaru and supporting partners such as Juwi Solar, White Wave Foods and Ideal Market.

Morning Schedule – Sunday July 10, 2011

Its perfectly timed a few weeks after the Bolder Boulder, the course is fun and challenging and can often times bring out the best runners in Boulder County. Japanese and Kenyan teams that come to Boulder to train for the summer will sometimes toe the line as well as other local elites who are looking to compete. But don’t let that intimidate you, the race’s intimate tone is set by the old fire truck that leads out the race. There is also a fun and competitive 2mile race option.

Ethiopia again sweeps International Team Challenge; Hastings (4th), Carney (5th) top Americans; Team USA second (women) and third (men); race record 54,554 entrants as well as millionth finisher at 33rd edition

By Mike Sandrock, Running USA wire

After going out too fast in last year’s Dick’s Sporting Goods BolderBOULDER 10K and leading her unsuspecting teammates into early oxygen debt and a third-place team finish, Renee Metivier-Baillie vowed to run smarter this year. That she and her teammates, Amy Hastings and Magdalena Lewy Boulet, did on this cloudy Memorial Day, placing second in the 2011 International Team Challenge.

The American women scored 19 points, coming just two points shy of upsetting powerhouse Ethiopia for the team title. Kenya, led by race champion Lineth Chepkurui in 32:30, was third with 26. Team Colorado, comprising Adriana Pirtea, Colleen De Reuck and Zoila Gomez, was also in the money in fifth place.

Ethiopia swept the men’s and women’s International Team Challenge titles for the third straight year, with the professional runners starting after a race record number of Bolder citizen entrants of 54,554 (with 49,271 finishers) on a new course.

In the first course change since 1981, the starting line was moved closer to the Folsom Field finish on the University of Colorado campus, to make for better loading and unloading of the runners and walkers comprising the 92 “waves” or starting groups.

“It worked out great,” said race founder Steve Bosley. His son, race director Cliff, pointed out that the start of the professional women’s race was delayed 16 minutes, because of the large number of people wanting to register Monday morning.

What also worked great was the teamwork displayed by the U.S. runners.

Boulder’s James Carney and teammates Ryan Hall and Aaron Braun placed 5-7-12 to place third behind Ethiopia who edged Kenya by one point, 12 to 13. Team Colorado (Jason Hartmann, Fernando Cabada and Brian Medigovich) also earned prize money, placing fourth.

Ethiopian 10,000 meter specialists Belete Assefa and Solomon Gonfa went 1-2, followed by Kenyans Allan Kiprono, who trains in Boulder under Dieter Hogan, and MacDonald Ondara. The winning time of 29 minutes, 23 seconds was not especially fast, but the BolderBOULDER is all about competition for the professional runners, said Ethiopian Hussen Adelo.

“When we race against Kenya, it is a fight!” he exclaimed through a translator, making boxing motions with his fists.

Local favorite Carney runs well at the BolderBOULDER. On Monday, he ran with Hall until 3½ miles, where the course climbs west towards the mountains before turning south and cresting at 4 miles. That is where Carney then caught Braun, and he picked off the faster starters on his way to his fifth-place finish (30:17), good for $1600 as well as his share of $17,500 team prize. Both totals include U.S. Olympic training funds.

“You line ‘em up, and I’ll knock ‘em down,” a happy Carney said, after standing with the other elites and the capacity crowd inside the football stadium. Everyone looked up as two F-14 fighter jets flew over, and grew silent during the moving playing of taps and singing of the national anthem, all part of what has become the largest Memorial Day gathering in the nation.

The most visible of the runners pre-race was 2008 Olympian Hall, coming off his epic Boston Marathon run just six weeks ago.

“I was pleased with my race,” Hall said. “I just wanted to enjoy the ride, coming off my 2:04. This is icing on the cake; the crowd was amazing, like the Olympics.”

The rivalry between Kenya and Ethiopia was reminiscent of the Olympics as well. This was the fifth consecutive Ethiopia win in the men’s race, but as close as it could be after last year’s 1-2-3 Ethiopia sweep that left the Kenyans privately fuming.

The third Kenyan in on Monday, Lani Rutto in sixth, finished ahead of Adelo, the third Ethiopian scorer. However, Adelo, a 2:09 marathoner, won it for his team in the most exciting sprint of the day, outkicking Constantino Leon Lopez of Peru at the 40-yard line by less than a tick of the clock for 9th place. That was enough to keep the Ethiopian streak going.

Perhaps it was the new start of the race, which is slightly uphill – the traditional course had a slight downhill – but this year, the packs stayed together longer, making for exciting team races on both the men’s and women’s sides.

“I was hurting once again,” said Metivier-Baillie, who showed true grit by running on a gimpy leg she injured during the club cross country championships in December. She has run just two races since then, and had only two months of full training leading into the BolderBOULDER.

Metivier-Baillie held her teammates back in the early going, unlike last year’s fast opening.

“It is a magical moment working together as a team,” added Metivier-Baillie. “We were second this time; next year, we will go for the win.”

Hastings, whose 2:27:03 at the Honda LA Marathon last March is the 8th fastest U.S. women’s time ever, placed fourth in 34:20. The Mammoth Track Club athlete said that with her focus on the 2012 Olympics, she does not know if the same Team USA will be back for a third Bolder next year, but she would like to return.

“The team aspect is so exciting,” she said. “It is so much more fun, and the crowd at the finish was amazing. Like the Olympics.”

Then Hastings paused. “Well, what I imagine the Olympics sound like. I have not been there … yet.”

At the 33rd edition, fittingly, a veteran, Mieszka Laczek-Johnson, age 34 of Denver, became the race’s one millionth finisher (the 20,801st finisher overall); she ran the 6.2 mile course in 58:43.

There are some new changes for this year that have many people re-thinking their race day strategies.

A New Start

In its first major course change in over 30 years the BolderBoulder has changed the start line of this iconic race just over 1k south of its previous location at 30th and Iris. The new starting line is at 30th and Walnut Street adjacent to the Twenty Ninth Street Mall.

Runner waves will start at 7am sharp to this year’s official starter: CU’s Athletic Director Mike Bohn. Make sure you check for your wave start time.Volunteers carrying signs that match your wave will be marking the starting area. If you have any questions, the Bolder Boulder Ambassadors in yellow shirts will be around to answer questions.

The course is marked at every kilometer and every mile. The race is chip timed by IPICO Sports Timing and you will get splits every mile as you pass over their timing mats. Make sure you bring your tag and have it attached to your shoe (or close for bare footers).

Instead of blasting down 30th for the first 1200 meters, which leads to the most gregarious to go out with the best in the field, this year, the route will start out on a slight uphill grade. It really isn’t much but it has lead to much discussion around how much slower this the times will be this year. Check out the course and elevation profile on Garmin Connect.

Even though this doesn’t include the new start, its always fun to watch Ryan Van Duzer with Frank Shorter as he narrates going through the course.

Transportation and Parking

The runner drop offs will be along 28th Street just south of Arapahoe and on Arapahoe just east of 3oth. According to the map runners can park at the Twenty Ninth Street mall in the surface lots and underground parking. Just DON’T get stuck on Pearl Parkway, this is reserved for RTD buses.

There are still plenty of parking lots and surface parking around. You can view an interactive map online. Just click the Transportation tab.

RTD offers a carefree RunRide service which will cost you between $8-10. Make sure to check the schedule and allow plenty of time before your start.

Race time

Remember that its easy to go into oxygen debt quickly at altitude so keep cool and go out on pace. Enjoy the energy as you roll through the first few miles. Wave to the belly dancers at the top of Folsom Street, glide down the slip and slides, try to hear the tunes as you pass by, and all with a big smile on your face because Brightroom will be there to capture the moment. Push hard down the final stretch along Folsom, you are almost done. Pump your fist as you enter the stadium to throngs of spectators.

Professional Race at 11am

Ryan Hall will lead the US men to compete against the dominating Ethiopian team and 9 other international teams.

The Men’s and Women’s International Team Challenge starts at 11am and are expected to finish between 11:30 and 11:40 in Folsom Stadium, so plan accordingly!!
