A second showing of the Unbreakable has been scheduled for Friday, Feb 10. Everything is the same as the previous night.

This is the film of the 2010 Western States 100. It is the only ultrarunning film made with high production values, from cinema-photography to editing, is feature-length (1:45), and follows four contenders as they prepare for the event, then shows the race itself up close and personal from a racers perspective, which turned out to be the most competitive 100 miler ever.

The film will be presented at the Dairy Center for the Arts – a wonderful venue that will enable us to enjoy a full evening of entertainment. The theater seats 250, and comes with a large foyer/art gallery for socializing, and where they sell wine, beer, and snacks.

Best of all, three of the main characters in the film will be participating in an interactive discussion with you – Geoff Roes, Anton Krupicka, and Nick Clark.

Finally, Running Times Magazine is organizing a major schwag-fest – this will be a raffle worth holding on to your ticket for.

The event is a fundraiser for the Boulder Outdoor Coailtion, which promotes stewardship, access, and appreciation of Boulder County’s public land.

The Dairy Center for the Arts is a very cool venue:
They are a good non-profit, worth supporting They sell wine and beer (local micro’s on tap!) They even allow same to be taken into the theater

The movie is good, but the party may be better … look forward to seeing you!

About Western States Endurance Run

Film Website: http://www.ws100film.com

(Description From Wikipedia) The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100-mile long (161 km) ultramarathon that takes place on trails in California’s Sierra Nevada annually, on the last weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Squaw Valley ski resort and finishes at the Placer High School track in Auburn, California. Runners climb a cumulative total of 18000 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 23000 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish. Because of the length of the race, the race begins at 5:00 A.M. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30 hour overall time limit for the race receive a bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.

Barefooters and anyone interested in joining some of the country’s top ultra runners are welcome to come join in a very special event for barefoot and natural runners alike.

McDougall created the Naked Tour as a nationwide celebration of running’s bare essentials which coincides with the paperback release of Born to Run. The tour visits thirteen cities across the country.

What can you expect from this event?

On his website, McDougall stresses this event is for everyone. The goal is to learn from each other, not beat each other, so we’ll stagger the start by pace groups. Each group will be led by an experienced pacer, like Scott Jurek so you’ll get the chance to pepper them with questions and mimic their style while you run.

“Show up, don’t stress, and remember Caballo’s motto: First focus on easy, ’cause if that’s all you get, that ain’t so bad.” You’ll be surrounded by lots of other people who are out for a good time and just getting the hang of minimalism.

Learn more about what to expect and what you might find at the Naked Cabaret on his website:

On a cool rainy morning in 1984 Steve Jones broke away early from a strong field including Rob De Castilla (Deek) at the Chicago Marathon to push a solo attack resulting in a world record time of 2:08:05.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon officials called it “one of the most revered efforts in all of marathon running.”

Mike Sandrock recalls the story in his article in the Daily Camera

This Saturday, October 30th at 5pm ‘Jonsey’ will giving his own recollections along with 30 minutes of race footage at the Avery Brewing Tap house. Entry is free and along with the $2 beers looks to be a lively night.

The video presentation will start at 6pm. It should be the first time Jones has seen actual footage from the race since that fateful day. It will be interesting to hear his gut reactions.

“Knowing Jonsey he will yuck it up” quipped Peter Richards who pulled the event together.

Richards and Sandrock were discussing running over coffee at the Trident one night and the idea hit them. Richards, a local race organizer and active member in the local running community was also on the National Board of Road Runners back in the 80s. In a stroke of luck, he just happened to be on the press truck that day.

“One of the challeges was actually digging up the old footage. CBS covered the event and broadcast it world wide” Since then it sat dormant in the archives.

Its been noted that Katherine Switzer and CU Cross Country Alumn Mary Decker were doing color commentary for CBS as the race unfolded.

In addition to the vintage video Richards hopes to dig up some of the slides he took while on the press truck, and possibly read an homage to Jones via email from De Castilla and Olympian Rosa Mota

Go to any local race and watch the runners go by and you will notice that there are as many styles as there are people. The faster runners appear to glide by with little effort while others labor with every step.

Swimmers and cyclists have long used drills to perfect their stroke and become more efficient athletes, but it really hasn’t been until recent years that average runners have paid much attention to their running form.

Improper form makes the body work harder to move across the ground and leads to many injuries.

New York based The Balanced Runner will be presenting two workshops in Boulder over the weekend of July 24 and 25th. The day long workshops promise you will learn how to:

Prevent/eliminate the causes of typical runners’ injuries, including runners’ knee, shin splints, hip pain, plantar fasciitis, and hamstring problems

Access the power of your pelvis for running that feels effortless and light from head to toes

Use your core muscles for more efficient running

Find better balance between your right and left sides

Push off and advance your legs more naturally

Develop sensitivity, awareness and understanding of your body so you can adjust

your form when running on your own

Run faster and enjoy it more

Workshop teachers Jae Gruenke and Julia Pak are both Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioners. The lessons are based on the principles of the Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education® and are safe for injured runners but potent enough to impact runners performing at very high levels. The workshop will include a small amount of running, gently guided movement lessons done on the floor, and video analysis of elite runners.

Each participant will leave with a list of reference points to practice on your own and an audio refresher CD.

So if you find that you hurt while running, or are frustrated with your recent performances, your body may be telling you its time to make some changes.

Register or get more information at BalancedRunner.com

Help Keep Foothill Ecosystems Healthy on June 19

Hall Ranch Open Space supports a mosaic of plant life including grassy meadows, dense shrubs, and Ponderosa pine forests. In order to maintain these healthy ecosystems, Boulder County Parks and Open Space is cooperating with local fire protection agencies to implement a 40-acre prescribed fire at Hall Ranch this fall.

Volunteers will use hand tools to rake thick piles of pine needles away from large trees, while other tasks may include removing old fences and non-native weeds. Your assistance will help protect important habitat trees while creating safer working conditions for wildland firefighters. This project runs from 8:30am-12:30pm. Minimum age is 12 with adult supervision.
